Most creamy condiments are loaded with oils and are high in calories. This avocado cilantro crema is lighter as it’s made with Greek yogurt, which provides protein and creamy avocado, which provides a dose of healthy fats.

This cilantro avocado crema contains five simple ingredients and takes only five minutes to make. It makes a great dip, spread, dressing and more.

Ingredients

Plain Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt provides a light but creamy base for this crema. Feel free to use full fat, low fat or 0% fat plain Greek yogurt.
Avocado: avocado adds creaminess, flavor and beautiful color.
Cilantro: this crema really isn’t complete without cilantro. It adds beautiful brightness and flavor.
Lime juice: for a bit of zest.
Salt: to bring out all the delicious flavors listed above.

Equipment

Small blender or food processor
Measuring cups
Rubber spatula

Instructions

Add plain Greek yogurt, avocado, lime juice, cilantro and salt to a small blender or food processor.

Blend until smooth. Taste and adjust lime juice or salt, as needed.

Uses

  • To top off tostadas and tacos.
  • Add to taco bowls and burrito bowls.
  • As a garnish for enchiladas and enchilada bakes.
  • Use as a dipping sauce for taquitos, quesadillas and Southwestern egg rolls.
  • Dollop on top of chimichangas.
  • Blend with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and use as a salad dressing.

FAQ

What is crema?

Traditional Mexican crema is a creamy and tangy condiment similar to sour cream. It is used to top many Mexican dishes such as tacos, enchiladas and soups.

Mexican crema can be difficult to find in American grocery stores, so sour cream is the closest option. This recipe is made with plain Greek yogurt to make it lighter.

How long does cilantro avocado crema last? 

The lime juice in the crema will preserve the color and flavor of the avocado. Store crema in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to four days.

Give the crema a good stir before serving.

Can I substitute anything in this recipe?

You can use authentic Mexican crema or sour cream instead of plain Greek yogurt. All other ingredients are key to making this recipe successfully.
