Breakfast Garbage Bread Ingredients

The ingredients needed to make this recipe.

Pizza dough: Store-bought dough works great here, but homemade pizza dough is also an option if you have it on hand. Let it come to room temperature before rolling for easier shaping.
Eggs: Scramble the eggs just until set. Avoid overcooking them since they’ll continue cooking in the oven.
Breakfast sausage: Pork sausage adds the most flavor, but turkey or chicken sausage can also be used. Be sure to fully cook and drain it well before assembling.
Cheddar cheese: Sharp cheddar gives the best flavor, but mild cheddar works too. Shredding your own cheese helps it melt more smoothly.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cook the breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease well and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, scramble the eggs with salt and pepper just until set. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. Roll the pizza dough out on a lightly floured surface into a large rectangle.
  5. Evenly spread the scrambled eggs over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Top with cooked sausage and shredded cheddar cheese.
  6. Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough into a log, tucking in the filling as you go. Pinch the seams and ends closed.
  7. Transfer the loaf seam-side down onto the prepared baking sheet. Brush the loaf all over with egg wash and score three slits in the top for ventilation.
  8. Bake for 18–20 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Tips

  • Allow your pizza dough to come to room temperature for easier rolling.
  • Be sure to seal the seam and ends well to prevent the filling from oozing out.
  • Cutting ventilation slits in the top of the garbage bread will help your bread from bursting open in the oven.
  • If the top is browning too quickly, loosely tent with foil during the last few minutes of baking.
  • Serve with hot sauce, ketchup or sausage gravy on the side for dipping.
